1. Robert Wadlow

Height: 8 ft 11 in / 2.72 meters

Lifespan: 1918 - 1940

Nationality: American

1. Robert Wadlow

Standing at 8 ft 11 in / 2.72 meters tall, American Robert Wadlow is the tallest person in history. Wadlow was born on February 22, 1918 in Alton, a small town in Western Illinois. Therefore, he is also known as the "Alton Giant" and the "Illinois Giant". Wadlow became a nationwide craze in the United States. Unfortunately, his height also comes with limited mobility. Wadlow needs braces to walk and has very inhibited sensations in his feet and legs.

On July 15, 1940, Wadlow died after a public event he was invited to attend in Manistee, Michigan. The cause of death was an ankle infection caused by a faulty shirt brace. He is only 22 years old.

2. John Rogan

Height: 8 ft 11 in / 2.72 meters

Lifespan: 1868 - 1905

Nationality: American

2. John Rogan

Until Robert Wadlow overtook him in the 1930s, John Rogan, at 8 ft 9 in/2.67 meters, was considered the tallest human being to ever live. He is still known as the tallest person of African descent who ever lived. Rogan was born on February 16, 1868 in the small town of Hendersonville, Tennessee, United States. Rogan's father was a slave freed from Northern Tennessee. Until the age of 13, Rogan's physical development was normal and there were no abnormalities. But not long after his 13th birthday, his body began to grow abnormally fast. At the age of 14, he could no longer walk or even stand because of an ankle disease caused by the rapid growth of his skeleton. As a full-grown adult, Rogan was offered a number of jobs at festivals and so-called freak shows, but turned them all down. Instead, he works as a painter. In September 1905 Rogan died of complications from ankle disease. He is 37 years old.

3. John Carroll

Height: 8 ft 8 in / 2.64 meters

Lifespan: 1932 - 1969

Nationality: American

3. John Carroll

The third tallest person in history is also an American. John Carroll was born in 1932 in Buffalo, New York. In the media and medical literature, he is also known as "The Buffalo Giant". He is 8 ft 8 in / 2.64 meters as a full adult. Carroll suffered from both Acromegaly (unusually enlarged hands and feet) as well as Kyphoscoliosis (abnormally curved spine), which got worse with his rapid growth after turning 16. Despite his status, Carroll managed to live a normal life and even (unsuccessfully) ran for public office. However, in late 1969, Carroll died at a hospital in Lackawanna, New York near his hometown of Buffalo. He is 37 years old.

4. Leonid Stadnyk

Height: 8 ft 5 in / 2.57 meters

Lifespan: 1970 - 2014

Nationality: Ukrainian

4. Leonid Stadnyk

Leonid Stadnyk is the fourth tallest person to ever live. At the same time, the Ukrainian is also the tallest non-American person to ever live. He was born on August 5, 1970 in a small village near the city of Zhytomyr in northern Ukraine (then part of the Soviet Union). Stadnyk is 8 ft 5 in / 2.57 meters tall. His rapid growth began after a necessary brain surgery he underwent at the age of 13. The surgery caused the growth of a brain tumor that released an abnormal amount of growth hormone. Thankfully, the tumor was not ultimately lethal, but it did cause Stadnyk to grow unusually fast. However, on August 24, 2014, Stadnyk finally died from a sudden brain hemorrhage. He is 44 years old.

5. Trijntje Keever
